From the incredible colors of an Atlantic Puffin to the beautiful chorus of songbirds, from boreal species in evergreen forests to shearwaters scaling over feeding Humpback Whales - Maine has it all! Not to mention a rugged coastline that is beautiful beyond compare. Indulge yourself on this tour to the Sunrise Coast and Downeast Acadia. We will enjoy an array of nesting warblers, thrushes, flycatchers, and others. Possibilities include boreal specialties like Gray Jay, Boreal Chickadee, Spruce Grouse, crossbills, and even Black-backed Woodpecker. We will be treated to unbelievable looks at seabirds, including Atlantic Puffins, Razorbills, Black Guillemots, and Arctics Terns. Raptors and marshbirds will also be observed, such as Bald Eagles, Peregrine Falcons, American Bitterns, and more. Offshore, we may encounter a variety of storm-petrels and shearwaters, as well as whales, dolphins, and seals. This year’s tour includes an added day, to experience even more of what Maine has to offer. As they say in Maine - “the way life should be.”
Day One: Arrive at the motel in Machias by 5:00 p.m., at which time we will all meet and discuss the upcoming birding opportunities presented by the Maine coast over a relaxing dinner.
Day Two: Depart at 6:00 a.m. for our charterboat trip to Machias Seal Island. At the island, we will be overwhelmed by the number and incredible views of hundreds of nesting Atlantic Puffins, Razorbills, Arctic Terns, and other seabirds. We will return around 12:30 p.m. and break for lunch. Afterwards, we will explore the beaches and trails of the Lubec Flats and Quoddy Head State Park - easternmost point in the U.S. We will search for nesting warblers, boreal species, and migrating shorebirds until 4:30 p.m. We will finish the day with a relaxing dinner (included) and review the day’s sightings.
Day Three: Depart early for the woodlands, uplands, and wetlands of Moosehorn National Wildlife Refuge and Cobscook Bay State Park. Our target species include a variey of waterfowl, marshbirds and boreal species, including the likes of. Gray Jay, Spruce Grouse, and Black-backed Woodpecker.. Late afternoon will find us heading towards Mt. Desert Island, with a stop for dinner on the way. Upon arrival, we will check into our accomodations near Bar Harbor for the next three nights.
Day Four: The morning will be filled with an exciting whalewatching excusion out of Bar Harbor.A stop at a nearby island may turn up a rare Roseate Tern, as well as other nesting seabirds, before heading to nutrient rich waters of the Gulf of Maine. We’ve seen up to three species of whales on previous trips, as well as phenomenal looks at shearwaters and storm-petrels. The afternoon will provide an introduction to the natural beauty of Acadia National Park, with stops at a number of overlooks, as well as nesting Peregrine Falcons, seabirds, and songbirds. Dinner and the evening are on your own.
Day Five: Meet at 6:00 a.m. for breakfast and a morning of breeding passerines and other northern species, amidst spruce-fir forests and rocky shorelines in Acadia National Park. The afternoon will find us enjoying commanding views on Cadillac Mt., the highest point on the Atlantic Coast. We will arrive back at the motel around 3:30. To finish the day out right, we will relax on a sunset nature cruise around the Cranberry Isles, stopping at Little Cranberry Isle for dinner (included), before returning to the motel around 8:30 p.m.
Day Six: The sounds of nesting songbirds in Acadia will greet us once again, as we depart at 6:00 a.m. for the park. We will bird until 8:30 a.m. A stop for breakfast will give us a chance to summarize our sightings, before returning to the motel for check-out and the conclusion of the tour. You are welcome to stay and explore even more of Maine on your own.
This tour includes five nights of accommodations at two comfortable motels, with birding opportunities right on the premises and extraordinary views. All rooms are furnished with two double beds and the usual amenities. ALL meals are included, from dinner on Day One to lunch on Day Five, including the sunset dinner cruise to an island just off the coast. Charter fees for the Machias Seal Island excursion and seabird and whale watching cruise are also included.
Also included are professional guide services for the duration of the tour. Brett M. Ewald, a naturalist and biologist with over 25 years experience, will be the tour leader on this exciting excursion. Brett has been involved in numerous research and educational projects, specializing in bird migration and distribution patterns. He recently co-authored a publication on waterbird movements on Lake Ontario. He has led over ten tours to Maine and looks forward to sharing the wonders of the Sunrise Coast and Downeast Acadia with you!
Besides the spectacular birding, coastal Maine has a natural beauty beyond compare, including beaches, rocky shorelines, and boreal forests. Maine is famous for its historic lighthouses, many of which we will see, as well as quiet seaside fishing towns. We will also be spending time at Bar Harbor, known for its quaint shops and galleries.

Terms and Conditions
A $250.00 deposit is required at time of booking. Any balance due is required May 1, 2012. Confirmation and an informational packet, including details and directions, will be sent upon receipt of deposit. Make your check or money order payable to Lakeshore Nature Tours. If the tour is full, a waiting list will be taken, and filled according to the date of registration. Due to the necessary reservations, a $100 service fee will apply to cancellations before May 1, 2012. Cancellations after May 1, 2012 will forfeit the entire $250.00 deposit. If weather prohibits the boat trip to Machias Seal Island, that portion of the tour fee will be refunded. Transportation is the responsibility of the participant(s) throughout the tour.
